Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time

When I ask people why they can’t do something they’d like to do, their most common response is: “I don’t have the time.”

Now, time is obviously a finite resource, but it’s not really the bottleneck that keeps people from doing what they want to do. The real bottleneck is energy.

Physics defines energy as the capacity for work, but in the human domain, we can think of it as our capacity for sustained activity of any kind. If we think about it, the amount of energy we have—rather than the amount of time we have—is what determines our level of accomplishment. Someone with an abundance of energy can get a lot done in a small amount of time, while someone with a shortage of energy can achieve nothing at all with a large amount of time.

In practical terms, this simply means that we need to shift our focus from managing our time to managing our energy. Energy Project President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Schwartz has this to say on the subject:

Energy comes from four main wellsprings in human beings: the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. In each, energy can be systematically expanded and regularly renewed by establishing specific rituals—behaviors that are intentionally practiced and precisely scheduled, with the goal of making them unconscious and automatic as quickly as possible.

In other words, the amount of energy we have is something we can systematically increase and/or maintain by practicing specific behaviors until they become habits. Needless to say, all the practices we offer at White Space Wellness—from yoga and meditation to t’ai chi and Reiki—are designed to help our students increase the amount of energy that they have so that they can fulfill their life’s intentions.

This January, in particular, we’re featuring two events that are all about cultivating energy through the four wellsprings mentioned by Mr. Schwartz: the body, emotions, mind and spirit. These are our 108 Sun Salutations and our Reiki Healing First Degree Workshop.
